Three to See Thursday: Two Plasketts, one Nutcracker and some bears

An Evening with Bill and Joel Plaskett: Some people dread hanging out with their fathers over the holidays, but not everyone. Multiple Juno winner Joel Plaskett was so influenced by his father Bill Plaskett, he made a record with him. As the younger Plaskett explains of the title track, Dragonfly, “As a starting point, I wanted to write a simple, folk song chorus that Dad and I could sing in harmony. The word solidarity came to mind as representing togetherness, strength and shared values. I wrote the song to celebrate unity, wherever you can find it, in an increasingly fractured world.” It’s an inspiring idea, and should make for an interesting night of music and stories. Ontario’s Mayhemingways open up.

Details: 7 p.m. at Myer Horwitz Theatre (8900 114 St.), $30 at ticketfly.com

The Nutcracker: This production by Alberta Ballet follows a long tradition started in Russia, debuting at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892. While the original piece by Marius Petipa was not an instant hit, Tchaikovsky’s score spread throughout the ballet community, and choreographers jumped at the challenge of creating their own version. Over the years, the ballet has been staged by some of the most well-known choreographers and ballet companies in the world. The Alberta Ballet’s celebrates its 10th anniversary this time.

It Bears Repeating art show: Art walk artist Jared Robinson is having a bear-themed show of his peppy animal illustrations at the Mice District’s greatest venue. The playful Robinson states, “I like to take an idea, whether a moment of connection or a situation felt, and create a time and space around it on the canvas. I enjoy experimenting and getting my ideas out in a way that words may not do justice.” As well as an artist talk, Edmonton’s Desert Rose is playing.
